Our rating of the best car insurance companies is based on feedback from real consumers who have filed claims in the last five years. We asked them questions about their satisfaction with the claims process, customer service, communication about claim status, and overall resolution. We also inquired as to whether they would recommend the company to others and if they planned to renew their policy. Their responses helped us to build our rating.
We partnered with a provider of pricing analytics solutions for the U.S. insurance industry to get comparative insurance rates for this study. This provider analyzed a report of insurance rates in all states from most of the largest national car insurance companies. Not every company operates in every state, but the provider was able to obtain publicly available rate data that car insurers file with state regulators.
Our study rates are based on profiles for both male and female drivers aged 20, 30, 40, and 60. The vehicles used in our study include the 2016 and 2020 Honda Accord, 2016 and 2020 Toyota Corolla, and 2016 and 2018 Ford F-250 Super Duty. Annual mileage ranged from 5,000 to 13,000 miles.
Three levels of car insurance coverage and three tiers of credit (good, fair, and poor) were used in the calculations. Drivers with clean records, as well as those with one accident, one speeding violation, or one DUI on their record, were also used to calculate certain driver types.
The rates shown here are for comparative purposes only and should not be considered indicative of the average rates offered by individual insurers. Because car insurance rates are calculated based on individual factors, the rates you receive from your insurer will differ from the rates shown here.
