A discharged debt is a debt that has been canceled, forgiven, or wiped out. When a debt is discharged, the debtor is no longer legally obligated to pay the debt, and the creditor cannot take any action to collect the debt. In most cases, a discharge of debt occurs when the debtor files for bankruptcy. It stays in credit report for up to ten years.
