When you hear the term merchant in relation to credit card payments, it simply refers to the business or individual that is selling the goods or services. In order for a merchant to be able to accept credit card payments, they must first set up a merchant account with a bank or other financial institution. Once the account is established, the merchant will be given a special credit card terminal that can be used to process payments.
