Tranche

A tranche is a portion of something, especially a debt or investment issue, that is distinct from other parts. A key feature of a tranche is that it usually has different terms concerning maturity, interest rate and credit risk. In bonds, for example, different tranches may offer investors different maturities and coupon rates. The different features of each tranche are designed to appeal to certain investor types while still being part of the same overall bond issue.
