Castrol's story is quite fascinating. It all began in 1899 when Sir Charles 'Cheers' Wakefield, 1st Viscount Wakefield departed from the Vacuum Oil Company and established C.C. Wakefield in England. Initially situated at Cheapside in London, the company primarily sold lubricants for trains and heavy machinery.

Around 1906, Wakefield launched their first lubricant designed specifically for cars. As the 20th century progressed, Wakefield became increasingly intrigued by the burgeoning motorized vehicles of the era, particularly airplanes and automobiles. Recognizing the need for specialized lubricants tailored to these new engines, Wakefield's team embarked on research and development.

Their quest led them to a breakthrough: a lubricant that possessed the unique qualities necessary to endure the demanding conditions posed by these modern engines. This innovative oil, formulated by incorporating a measured amount of castor oil derived from castor beans, exhibited the ideal characteristics—thin enough to function instantly during cold start-ups yet resilient enough to endure the intense heat generated by high engine revolutions.

Named 'Castrol', this oil swiftly gained recognition and popularity for its exceptional performance. By 1960, the Castrol brand had become so widely renowned that C.C. Wakefield rebranded the company as Castrol Ltd., a testament to the remarkable success and impact of their pioneering lubricant.
