IntroductionExpert Observations & HighlightsWhy It’s the Best for Decorative InteriorsWhat Sets This Shop ApartBenefits & DrawbacksEvaluation Summary *Nestled opposite Sawbridgeworth train station in Hertfordshire, Maltings Antiques is a delightful destination spread across three characterful floors, offering an impressive range of antiques and vintage finds. I visited twice—November 2023 and March 2025—with the goal of refilling and refreshing my antique webstore’s stock, keeping in mind airline luggage limits.
If you're curious to see what treasures I unearthed, read the related chapter of: Discovering Sawbridgeworth's Maltings Antiques, where I dive into the finds that made it into my shop.
Maltings Antiques excels in authentic furniture and decor pieces, ideal for home or boutique use. From elegant cabinets to rare side tables, everything feels genuine, functional, and thoughtfully selected. A personal highlight was a stunning Moroccan side table, truly one-of-a-kind.
The selection also includes jewellery, kitchenalia, smalls, curiosities, and plenty of ready-to-use home decor. It's not just an antique centre—it's a well-curated interior design resource.
The assortment also includes a small but fascinating collection of prehistoric fossils, adding an unexpected touch of natural history to the mix.
Expect a warm welcome. The staff are not only approachable but also well-versed in their stock, happy to chat or help without being pushy.
While not the fastest-rotating shop I’ve seen, the stock refresh rate is decent. From November 2023 to March 2025, I noticed enough new items on my second visit to make the trip worthwhile. A repeat visit after a few months would likely offer fresh opportunities for discovery.
The restoration quality appears professional and in line with the high standards typical of English antique traditions. Pieces are not over-polished or stripped of their age—there’s a clear respect for patina and originality, with just the right amount of care given to maintain their function and appeal.
Spread over three uneven floors, Maltings Antiques makes good use of its quirky architecture. The narrow, steep steps and low ceilings may pose a challenge to some, especially during busier times, but the shop’s layout helps mitigate this. Signage clearly indicates a path to follow, and having a separate entrance and exit makes the flow smoother.
The interior is divided into distinct zones: furniture, smalls, kitchenalia, curiosities, etc., with every item given space to breathe. You won’t find piles of objects or clutter here—each piece is curated and deliberately placed, making browsing a pleasure rather than a chore.
With low timber ceilings, vintage rugs, and a homey ambiance, the centre feels more like exploring an old country home than a commercial space. Bonus points for the hot black tea offered during my visit—a lovely gesture that added to the experience.
If you're sourcing for interior decoration - be it a private home or a small retail space - Maltings Antiques shines. The selection is inviting, stylish, and practical, especially appealing for interior designers looking for distinctive, characterful pieces at fair prices for end-use.
What makes Maltings Antiques truly stand out is its selection of untouched or professionally restored antique furniture, all of high quality and ready for use—whether in a home setting or a small business space. The presentation is especially inviting, with items displayed in a way that resembles a cozy home environment, making it easy to visualise them in your own space. Just as notable is the extremely warm welcome from the staff, which immediately creates a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
